Jon is the founder and director of Journey Home whose work is to heal soul and society through pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago and Mexico-US Border. He is also a PhD candidate in Christian Social Ethics and adjunct professor of New Testament at Point Loma Nazarene University. Jon has written multiple books, including co-authoring Mending the Divides: Creative Love in a Conflicted World. His writing has appeared in the USA Today, Sojourners, Red Letter Christians and numerous other publications. Jon regularly speaks at churches, universities, conferences and retreats.
In 2011, Jon co-founded Global Immersion, a peacemaking training organization, and was the co-director until 2023. This work embedded Jon in the Christian justice world for most of his adult life as a practitioner and trainer. It led him to march in NYC after the murder of Eric Garner, stand with our siblings at Standing Rock, guide delegations into the Palestine-Israel conflict and mobilize support for migrants at the Tijuana/San Diego border. These experiences invited Jon to confront many of the conflicts within himself that inhibited his ability to pursue equity, justice and peace in society.
In 2019, a solo pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago was profoundly transformative and ushered in a new vocational season. With the conviction that the path to healing society comes through our individual and collective healing, his work with Journey Home is inviting Jesus’ followers to journey home to their hearts and contribute to a society where everyone has a home.
At the center of Jon’s life and work is living deeply rooted in his neighborhood with his wife, four kids and house church community in San Diego.
