Celtic Christianity and the Spirituality of Beer

I’m currently working on a project that draws lines of connection between St. Patrick of Ireland, Celtic Christianity and New Monasticism.  It has been a fascinating study, but when I came across this Celtic prayer I couldn’t help but pass the word.  The Celtic Christians would create “everyday prayers” that created a space to acknowledge and commune with God throughout both the tedious and hopeful experiences in life.  They range from topics of making the bed to petitions for God’s protection.  The prayer below (author unknown) is a prayer of praise for their favorite beverage:

I would like to have the men of Heaven

In my own house:

With vats of good cheer

Laid out for them . . .

I would like a great lake of beer

For the King of Kings,

I would like to be watching Heaven’s family

Drinking it through all eternity.

  5. Jon – Thanks for the prayer. Have you read Michael Frost’s Exiles? In it he speaks about the creation Guiness. If you haven’t I will pass on since I think you would enjoy.

  6. Love it. I just tasted the brew I shared with you. My friend & I partook & it was a tasty treat. Don’t forget to “gas it” & enjoy. I’m reading N.T. Wright’s: “Surprised by Hope,” & thought well if we use in the New Earth what we’ve learned here we’ll need brewers, since many brewers aren’t Celtic, etc.

  7. Josh – I haven’t read it, but I have heard it references a lot. Don’t have a lot of time for extra reading, but I would love to at least check out the Guiness chapter!
    Sean – Running to kitchen right now to “gas it!” That sounds a bit odd…You and N.T. are presenting an eschatology I can cheer for!
